Director Lee Ji-won’s latest feature film, Bikwang (also titled Rainy Day), has kicked off its theatrical run with strong momentum, debuting at number one among Korean films. According to data from the integrated computer network for movie ticket sales, the drama drew 16,038 moviegoers on its September 2 opening day, securing the highest domestic audience tally of the week.
The story follows a once-prominent celebrity couple, Jung-gu (Ryu Seung-ryong) and Nam-mi (Ha Ji-won), whose lives fall apart after the sudden arrival of Jung-gu’s estranged daughter, Dong-ju (Kim Si-a). Eight years after their breakup, the two are forced to reunite and risk everything to uncover the truth when Dong-ju becomes embroiled in a shocking incident. Marked by themes of deep-seated trauma, redemption, and unconventional family bonds, the project serves as the much-anticipated follow-up from director Lee Ji-won following The Back of My Back.
Initial audience reactions have centered heavily on the film’s emotional weight and the standout chemistry of its ensemble cast. Viewers have widely praised Ryu Seung-ryong for delivering a grounded, deeply moving performance centered on paternal sacrifice, while Ha Ji-won brings a refreshing, layered edge to her role as Nam-mi. The film is further anchored by strong supporting turns from Kim Si-a, Kim Hae-sook, Kim Sun-young, and Kim Young-min.
With early word-of-mouth highlighting the movie’s poignant message of resilience and healing, industry observers are closely watching whether Bikwang can maintain its lead and build steady box-office success throughout September.
